2024 Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible as it crosses the U.S. from Texas to Maine. It will peak in Illinois around 1:59pm, reaching maximum totality at 2:01pm. After the April 8 eclipse, the next total solar eclipse won't be seen in the U.S. until August 23, 2044.

According to the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), an eclipse is an awe-inspiring celestial event that drastically changes the appearance of the two biggest objects we see in our sky: our sun and moon.

The path of totality will extend across Mexico, the United States, and Canada - crossing directly over southern Illinois.

Carbondale, IL will be among the Illinois cities in the path of totality. Below is a timetable of the path of totality through Carbondale, IL.

Partial begins: 12:42pm CDT
Totality begins: 1:59pm CDT
Maximum: 2:01pm CDT
Totality ends: 2:03pm CDT
Partial ends: 3:18pm CDT
